First, there was direct mail. You could rent or compile your lists and send out a direct mail package. Within weeks, you’d know exactly how many people responded to your effort and how many sales you had.
Then there was email marketing. Companies started building and renting massive lists and testing email marketing campaigns. The response rates were great at first and then tapered off.
Now of course there’s been an explosion of marketing channels, prompted by various social media applications. It’s much like the explosion of TV channels that fragmented broadcasting.
So the big question today … is social media watering down marketing ROI or enriching it? And can social media ROI be measured as accurately as direct or email marketing has been in the past?
